FIREPROOF

We put our ol' Apple TV to good use last weekend and purchased the movie Fireproof. I had heard the hoop-lah about it but Brent and I hadn't had the chance to see it as of yet. It was great to finally sit down and watch it together. Brennen even got in on the fun and joined us as well. I found several "teaching moments" with him throughout the show that left an open door to discuss "grown up" topics with him. Things that I felt like he should know as a young man and how those things would pertain to his future. One of those teaching moments was this segment I've included below. Make sure to turn off my blog music first before pushing play on this video.

This is such an ah-ha moment for anyone struggling in life. Not just in their marriage but in everyday life. How can we continue to spit in God's face day in and day out but yet wonder in the next breath, why our life has gone to such hell in a handbasket? We are all guilty of it. We've all been there. I don't want to roll out my blinged out zebra print pulpit (as I would envision it would be if I was ever a pastor) Ha ha - and lay down my prechings for the day. I am a sinner like the rest of the world. However, I've come to realize that I cannot get through life without my super, awesome, big, big God. Mine and Brent's marriage alone has had a couple of turbulent times in its 15 years. Marriage is never easy - ever. I don't care who you are. Marriage takes work. Hard - never ending - undying WORK! As young girls wishing for the moment of our lives when we finally make that walk down the aisle hand in hand with our handsome young prince, no one ever sits us down and says...Marriage will be hell at times. Marriage will suck at times. There will be times when you will want to give up. There will be times when you will detest and literally hate one another. There will be times when you will plot to smother him in his sleep with your own pillow when he leaves the toilet paper empty on the holder (remember that? If you are a long time blog follower you will.), etc. etc. etc. No one tells us that marriage will be the hardest job in our lives and that we will have to fight and fight some more with every second of every day to keep that marriage well, attended to, comfortable, safe, and so on. We just marry and have the false belief that life will be our fairy tale from there on out.

Thankfully, my & Brent's marriage has always had God in it. At certain times, God has been way more prominent in our marriage. Other times, he hasn't. It is in those moments when we failed to make God a priority that our marriage ultimately paid the price. As we look back in hindsight, we can see a pattern. No God = turbulence in the marriage. As we have grown older, we realize that a marriage takes three. Brent, me, and God. It's not a 2 person partnership, it is a three person team.

So...on top of having teaching moments with Brennen during this movie, and loving that fact that I was watching Kirk Cameron on TV again just as I did back in the day when I was a young girl watching "Growing pains" I also found myself enjoying the fact that I was watching the movie with my best friend, my partner in crime, the love of my life, my air. We watched the movie side by side, gripping one anothers hands, just like young school kids in a theater all over again. After watching the show, I took a huge breath of fresh air and found myself once again thanking God for the husband that emails me emails from his office during the day just like he had a few days ago. It had words that read "Thank you for being my ROCK and keeping our life together. I would not live with out you! You mean something to me I can’t explain…Thank you." I found myself thanking God for the husband that does simple but oh so powerful things like he did this week when buying my favorite sugar cookies from the bakery at the grocery store and then leaving them on the kitchen counter for me to find the next morning - along with valentine heart candies that he had removed from the box and spelled out the words "I love you" with. I found myself thanking God for the husband that works his tail off day in and day out to provide for our family in the way in which he does. In the end, I was plain and simply put...just thanking God and just being thankful all the way around.

Although we couldn't totally relate to the storyline in the Fireproof movie because we had never been up against those type topics, the movie did make me grateful for those couple of turbulence in our marriage that ultimately helped propel us to today. We'll celebrate our 15 year anniversary on March 5th and as Brent always says..."That is world record time now days baby." Without those turbulence in our past, we wouldn't be where we are today. Without those turbulence, we wouldn't have been brought to our knees by God and taught to rely on him. If we hadn't reached out for God during those dark moments when on our knees, we probably wouldn't still be married today.

So, although the plot line of the movie differed substantially from topics that our own marriage had been through, we could definitely relate to the times when we had basically spit in God's face but yet sat wondering why our lives were in shambles. My friends and family will tell you that I like to call it "Gods baseball bat to the knees theory." Keep ignoring him - keep shunning him while thinking you don't need him (God), keep being embarrassed of him, etc. and then eventually...our big mighty and oh so powerful God will whip out a baseball bat and swing it just low enough to hit your legs in just the right way that it will knock them out from underneath you and bring you to your knees. Thus, bringing you closer to him. No, I do not believe for one second that God punishes us for our sins. However, I do believe that he will present us with consequences in some way, shape, or form for the dumb choices we make in life. Those consequences are teaching moments that he intends for us to learn from, give glory to him because of, and soften your heart while doing so. In return, you learn that you can't make it thru life without him. And we can't!

So watch Fireproof - with or without your spouse. Preferably with your significant other though. Either way, just watch it. It's a great movie - even though my man Kirk is a little rusty on the acting skills after being away from the camera all these years. :) We still love him though, don't we girls??? And in the meantime, I'm going to go put my blinged out zebra print pulpit back in storage for now and stop my preaching for the night. Thanks for coming to the service. Wink wink! ;)

In him always, Angie

Amen, sista! I love it when you talk about your love for the Lord!

I loved that clip. There are a few people in my life right now that just don't believe they'll go to Hell because they are good people. Never mind the fact that they continue to believe that they don't need God in their lives. All the while, their lives are at that point where they are about to get hit by that bat that you spoke of. How do you help someone believe? It's so hard for me to imagine not believing.

I feel like I'm walking that fine line between sharing my faith with them and being too "preachy".

That's funny about Kirk Cameron....I was wondering if it was just me that thought he might be losing his "skills"! LOL

Thanks for the great post! Let me know when the next service will be! Ha!!

Kristin...
I can so relate to having friends or family members that believe they will go to heaven just because they feel as though they are a good person. I think initially...before we truly form a REAL relationship with Christ, we all believe that to some extent. Ya know? It isn't until you break it down, all of it, regarding Christ and what he stands for, his terms, and how we need to work every day - even harder than the day before - to be a better person - a better Christ follower -and just more like him period. We definitely won't get thru the pearly gates of heaven just from being "nice." :)

And girl...don't ever be afraid to be too "preachy." Although I hated my Moms preaching to me back in my younger days, it is her seeds that were planted which caused the growth of my love for the Lord today. Preach it sista' - preach it. You might be their only seed they ever encounter in life. Don't be afraid to help them grow. You can minister to them without pushing it or forcing it down their throat. Keep on loving the Lord and let your actions and decisions be the reflection they see. Over time, we can only pray that those who don't believe will want what we have in the Lord.

Love ya sista'! Thanks so much for coming to my sermon and supporting my soapbox. Hee hee!

Well Don't look now Pastor Seaman, But You just delivered one hell of a message! You got me crying here at work, no make-up to fix the mess. After my wonderful grandson sat through the movie with me last night- again, I feel like he is really picking up on this relationship stuff (He's quite the little man) I can't believe you described you're blinged out pulpit just like I would imagine you to design one!--too funny! I thought the movie was excellent!I know that we do have dues to pay for our bad choices in life, I have had to learn everything the hard way, and I must be a slow learner too. I enjoyed this post Honey, I love you so much, and I love that you have such a wonderful husband, thanks for taking such good care of my daughter Brent. Brennen, thanks for being grandma Sue's date last night.xoxoxo

Angie,

Mike and I watched this movie this weekend, too. Anybody that knows us knows what trials and tribulations we have been through both as a couple and individually. After 15 years of marriage, we were separated for 3 months in 2008. It took me trust my loved ones in God's care and getting myself on the right path for God to begin to really work.

I think it's hard to turn things over to Him when you get so used to being CEO of the Universe. (wink ;-) ) My husband and I watched this movie together and I was so proud of seeing his reactions and seeing him appreciate the message of the film. It really touched us both and we are so grateful to God for bringing us back on the right path....together. Our son needs us and we needed each other.

Fireproof is a great movie. Not sure about your church, but I know alot of area churches are using the materials (available at Family Christian bookstores) to host Fireproof your marriage seminars/classes. I bought the book The Love Dare when it first came out (having not seen the movie) It's great.

Thanks for sharing, Angie.

What a true post! Marriage is definately not easy and you get out of it what you put into it. You have to wake up everyday saying to yourself "what can I do today to make my spouse happy or feel special" I love what Brent does...so awesome.

We need God to guide us...AMEN!

Hey Ang,

Well said once again, I completely agree marriage is very hard work! And both have to work at it ...Cause if only one is giving and not receiving then there is nothing there.. I was never told anything we learned from our mistakes.I always welcome the Lord into my family and it bother's me when others don't or make fun of me ..For instance everytime we pass a church whoever is in the car especially the girls I make them do there cross ( NOT SURE IF IT'S A GREEK THING)and if there is someone with us outside of the family all I hear is "WHY"? And I sit there and look at them in disbelief..
ALso I completely agree with Brent as well where he stated "That is world record now days" you don't see that anymore and it's a shame I am so proud Nick & I will be together for 16 long loving yrs Aug 10.....
Brent is like Nick in a way even though we are together 24/7 he will always find a way to let me know how he feels...I think we need that once in a while...
It's nice to know how the other is feeling ...
Can't wait to see this movie....Wow can't believe Kirk Cameron is in it (LOL) I used to drool over him when I was little....

Once again thanks for sharing your wonderful beliefs with us and opening up as well......Your an INSPIRATION to us all!!!!!!!!!!

Hugs Nicky

P.S. Where did you put the Pink FLip FLop?

Hey Nicky...I took the ANGIE keychain and the flip flop one and connected them together. I then added them both to my already existing keychain. Too fun! I love them! Thanks again. You are such a doll!

Good Morning,

I read this post last night and after that i was thinking about your anniversary date and i kept telling myself there is something with that date....Then I asked Nick and he said "UH It's your parent's annniversary" he looked at me like what happened to me. I can't believe the date didn't register with me cause his b-day is March 6 & then my middle daughter is March 11 so and we are always celebrating the for 2wks of March .....What a coincidence ...I still can't believe I couldn't remember...

Have a Happy your Sunday.....

We bought this last weekend and what a great investment! I think watching this should be a requirement in every marriage! Did you see the out-takes and behind the scenes? Thought that was great that Kirk Cameron brought in his real wife for the kissing scene...said he would never kiss anyone but his wife. WOW, especially coming from an actor...Now that is saying something and how romantic :-)
So funny, I use to have his poster up on my wall. My mom hated it! Now, knowing what kind of man he is she has reconciled those feelings :-)
Have a great day,
Heather

Hey DancingQueen, yes...I saw that little Cora passed away this morning. Just rips my heart out. I can't imagine. Two weeks ago their world was fine - so they thought - other than a few baby ear infections. Now look, 14 days later and their precious baby girl has been called home to Jesus. So, so, sad!

And yes...some of the faithful bloggies are being sucked up by crackbook - whoops - I mean facebook. Ha ha! Not me though. I'll always be here. :)

Hugs sis,
